Personal Connection:
My personal connection to Things Fall Apart is that I could relate to having my older brother look up to for inspiration as Nwoye did to Ikemefuna while he was living with them. The only differences is that My older brother would be Nwoye and I would be Ikemefuna. My brother was always the lazy type because my dad had high expectations and didn't want him to become like my uncles in jail, but my brother had no interest to learn so he end up dropping out in his sophmore year of highschool. I grew up exceeding my dad's expectations so he looked on to me as Okonkwo did to Ikemefuna.
This personal connection is ironic to me as i read the book because of the different setting and time but the same situation.
Text to Text Connection:
This book connects to Lord of the flies by Okonkwo acting as Jack with ruling his family out of anger and wanting things his own way. Jack ruled his tribe of big boys with savagery and fear as Okonkwo is doing. Okonkwo takes apart of Jack's personality of savagery from hunting, wars, and his great accomplishments of beheading enemies. As Jack did, Okonkwo tries teaching his son the warrior lifestyle but like Piggy, Nwoye can't come to admire this upbringing.
Likes/Dislikes of the Book:
What i liked about this book was the native African background it gives the reader to better get a feel of an African tribes' upbringing and customs. It gave the reader a challenge as far as comprehending the language, and how they would talk. What i disliked was that even around the context clues, the African wording was hard to understand and the names of characters would have to make you back-track to figure out what was going on and not get confused which character is which.
Lesson Learned From the book:
The lesson learned from the book would be the factors of life, family and spirit can and will affect you and your surrounding anywhere. This book was full of its own customs and conflicts because of tradition and still customs but by relating your life to the story in detail, shows how your life situations are affect by your beliefs, customs, and family as well. People are never different from each other just by their region but by mindset they choose to think along in morality.
